I Need Do Nothing
This morning I felt myself slipping from excitement about our book project into overwhelm. I kept thinking about all the things we still needed to do. Heck, here we are– a third of the way into this contest for Next Top Spiritual Author and we don’t even have a Facebook fan page up yet. Indeed I had only told my family, our neighbors, and a handful of people that we are even in this contest. I felt the pit in my stomach grow even deeper as I thought about all the things I still needed and wanted to do.
I Need Do Nothing
The more I worried the harder it was to get inspired. So, I took a deep breath and remembered this quote from A Course in Miracles: “I need do nothing.”
- I don’t need to build a complete website this red hot minute.
- I don’t need to get a Facebook fanpage today.
- I don’t need to figure out which contact software to use.
- I don’t even need to “win” this contest.
The moment I remembered that, “I NEED do nothing,” I started to relax. Once I relaxed some soothing thoughts came to mind and I was able to remind myself why I entered into this contest in the first place.
Why I Entered the Contest
I entered the contest because I thought it would be fun, give me some structure for working and playing with Howard (my partner and husband), and offer me an opportunity to “play big.” As an added benefit, this contest would allow me to collaborate with fellow authors who live in my cohousing neighborhood and meet some interesting new people. I also expected that this contest would inspire me to create some new teleclasses, attract some new coaching clients and acquire new skills in internet marketing.
What Winning Means to Me
I didn’t enter the contest, primarily, to win the carrot at the end of the stick – a publishing contract with Hampton Roads and $50,000 to promote the book. Winning would, of course, be wonderful, but it isn’t – and never was, the main draw for me. I measure my success by the joy that I experience in the moment and if I’m not having a good time moment by moment, then, by my standards, I’m not winning.
Law of Attraction is Responding to the Way I Feel
As soon as I noticed that my joy and excitement in the project was turning to struggle and overwhelm, I realized that I was out of sync with the harmony of spirit, with my own highest wisdom. I’m not able to be in the flow when I’m feeling yucky. When I’m feeling yucky, everything becomes a slog; I miss the inspired impulses that would lead me to my goals easily and effortlessly.
And even worse; not only does it feel badly now, but law of attraction will ensure that my coming attractions will be more of the same. In other words, yucky feelings attract yucky happenings.
I Can Shift the Way I Feel
Nothing is so important that it is worth letting the life force be sucked out of me – my life force is my connection to Source. Nothing is worth languishing in this place for, so I reach for thoughts that feel better. I know that, if I can make myself feel better, my inspiration and energy will return.
Soon, I was feeling better and it wasn’t long before I had an inspired thought– why not write an article. OK. Adding a task to my already stacked to-do list might not seem like it would be helpful, but thinking about writing feels good: I’m getting back in the flow. Now that I’m relaxed, my spirit is soaring – and soon, words are flowing easily out of me and I’ve completed another article for my blog. Good for me.
Now it’s your turn
Have you got something that has turned from wonderful to overwhelming?
Here’s a recap of the steps that can take you from overwhelm and struggle to peace and joy:
1. Pay attention to the way you feel and notice when your energy is sagging
2. Accept yourself for where you are at
3. Remind yourself why you created your goals in the first place
4. Soothe yourself by remembering that everything is a choice (You need do nothing)
5. Reach for thoughts that feel a little better
6. Ask spirit to guide you to what’s most important
7. Follow your joyful impulses
