At first I was puzzled. Emails from friends were pouring into my inbox with the subject line “RE: Your Birthday.” The first email was a yahoo autoresponse with details of how my friend could be reached and a warning not to send jokes or chain letters.

The second email asked, “Did you send this?”

My puzzlement turned to embarrassment and guilt when I realized what I had done.

Just a few minutes earlier I had opened an email from a friend asking me to allow her to have access to my birthday. It was a Facebook app. It came from someone I knew and trusted and I clicked on the links. Handy, I thought, to have reminders of friends’ birthdays in advance.

I clicked through the permissions, with only slight hesitation, thinking to try it out. It worked for Linked-In too. How convenient. I was busy, so I went through this part a bit too fast. I clicked on a button thinking I was just refreshing my screen and instead, this handy little Facebook app sent emails to all my friends on Facebook and Linked-In, asking them to get the same app.

I had just spammed everyone. I had just spammed all my Facebook and Linked-In friends! Arrggghhh!

I try to be respectful of what I send by email and carefully avoid all those “send this to all your friends” type emails.

I didn’t even know how to undo this one. How do I send a follow-up reply saying “don’t click on that link!”? I knew enough to post a warning on my status in Facebook and Linked-In. And I promptly deleted the Facebook app.

Then I opened another “RE: Your Birthday” email. This one was from Evelyn who I hadn’t seen since her wedding ten years ago. This time I had to chuckle. Her email said,

“I don’t Face. My birthday is August 28th, 1959. Feel free to send chocolate. Dark. Fair trade.”

I felt uplifted. My guilt was evaporating.

I replied back to Evelyn and we caught up with each other’s lives.

I noticed some other really nice email comments coming in too and I had wonderful email exchanges with other folks I hadn’t heard from in a long time.

In one such exchange I noticed a delightful synchronicity.

I had spent the past weekend creating a 2012 calendar online. The software was so flexible that I could actually add people’s pictures into the days of the calendar.  This was so much fun, that I spent many hours getting my family and friends’ birthdays updated.

It was the next day that I clicked on that initial “Your Birthday” request email from my Facebook friend. She had actually sent it on the weekend I was working on the calendar.

Coincidence? I think not.

Just a timely reminder about the power of focus. Law of Attraction will bring you more of what you focus on whether you want it or not. It doesn’t always match so precisely as it did here with birthdays, it’s usually more of a vibrational match to the feeling or essence of something.  I had great fun attracting birthdays for my calendar and that Facebook app brought me a whole lot more potential fun with birthdays very quickly.

Nevertheless, I’m going to pay more attention to where I put my attention.
